Diabetes is a chronic disease (Long-lasting). It is characterised by high blood sugar levels. The medical term for diabetes mellitus is diabetes.
Diabetes happens when the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells do not use insulin correctly. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells and turn into energy.
- Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce any insulin at all or cannot use it properly.
- Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it properly.
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar levels.
The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that helps the body use or store glucose. When the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not respond appropriately to insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream.
The symptoms of diabetes mellitus are:- increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, slow healing wounds, dry mouth and skin infections.
Complications include:- blindness in one or both eyes, kidney failure, heart attack or stroke.
Precautions include:- maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
